Democratizing healthcare through at-home sleep apnea tests

Manyone's affiliate partner, Questtonó, designed an IoT solution to improve the diagnosis process for sleep apnea in collaboration with Biologix, a Brazilian health-tech company. We transformed the design and functionality of Oxistar, a wearable sleep apnea diagnostic device. By merging user-friendly design with innovative technology, Oxistar enables affordable and accessible at-home testing, enhancing care while reducing pressure on healthcare systems.

Challenge

Addressing barriers to diagnosis

At least one-third of Brazilians suffer from sleep apnea; however, that figure is likely much higher, as sleep apnea often goes undiagnosed due to complex and expensive testing methods. Biologix sought to create an accessible solution to lower these barriers, improving diagnostics and extending care to underserved populations in Brazil.

Approach

Redesigning for usability and integration

We looked at the Oxistar, a wearable device created by Biologix, to understand potential service experiences and opportunities for enhancing the user experience. The Oxistar allows the user to take a sleep apnea test in the comfort of their own home. When sleeping, the data is translated through an integrated app into a diagnosis, which is delivered to the user and their primary health practitioner – providing a realistic snapshot of the user’s sleep patterns.

For a sleep wearable to be utilized, it has to be comfortable. We revamped Oxistar’s design, focusing on ergonomics and human-centric usability. Alongside this, we developed a cohesive digital ecosystem, including app and web design, packaging, and visual identity, ensuring a seamless experience.

Outcome

Enabling equitable care

The updated Oxistar device enables at-home testing that is affordable and accessible, enhancing care while reducing pressure on healthcare systems. Following the Covid-19 pandemic, Biologix’s Oxistar device was further redesigned to capture and monitor patients with mild symptoms, primarily through blood oxygen levels. This enables even more patients to be reliably monitored at home, relieving hospitals and health care professions to focus on more severe cases.
