Turning play into music

Tembo reimagines the drum machine and sampler as a tactile, playful instrument that invites people, of all experience levels, to create music from the very first touch. Created by Musical Beings, with Manyone as the industrial design and engineering partner, Tembo combines the simplicity of physical play with the power of modern music technology. By replacing complex interfaces with magnetic tokens and a wooden grid, Tembo turns beat-making into an intuitive, hands-on experience – one that grows with users from curious beginners to confident performers.

Challenge

Lowering the barriers to music creation

Electronic music tools often overwhelm newcomers with screens, menus, and steep learning curves. For children, families and curious beginners, the distance between first contact and creative expression can feel frustratingly long. The challenge was to design an instrument that removes complexity while still offering enough depth to inspire exploration and creativity over time.

Approach

Designing music as playful interaction

We replaced complex interfaces with a tactile sequencer using magnetic tokens, turning rhythm into a physical, intuitive interaction. In parallel, we re-engineered the mechanical architecture to enable scalable production while preserving the refined feel of real wood. This included precise control of light through wood veneer, tight tolerances and close collaboration with manufacturing to align design, performance and efficient assembly.

Outcome

A new entry point to musical creativity

The result is a musical instrument that feels welcoming from the first moment. Users can create beats, record sounds and jam with other instruments without technical setup or prior knowledge. By blending craft, technology and play, Tembo invites more people into music making – turning everyday spaces into creative playgrounds for learning, collaboration and expression.
