Why the future of research isn’t another 150-slide deck. It’s evidence designed to drive action.

We have access to more consumer data, more sophisticated tools, and more ways to understand what people think and do. Yet too often, research still culminates in a static deck – leaving organizations to connect the dots, find the story, and work out what to do next.

In a world that doesn’t pause, research shouldn’t live in the rearview mirror. It should be the fuel for your next move.

Article quick-read:

  • Research should start with the decision, not the questionnaire. Design research around the business questions and decisions it needs to inform.

  • Evidence should be turned into action, not another data dump. The value of research comes from interpreting what the findings mean and identifying a clear path forward.

  • Research should live beyond the final deck, giving teams a usable foundation for future decisions and action.

The problem

In the consumer insights world, we’ve all lived the nightmare: a global research house delivers a 150-slide deck. You open it, hoping for a roadmap, but find a data dump masked by a weak storyline.

The agency’s job is "done," but your work has just begun. You and your team then spend the next two weeks in a scramble – re-working charts, hunting for a narrative in the appendices, and trying to find the substance required to back a high-stakes decision.

More often than not, insight departments can piece the puzzle together to drive value. But when the burden of work falls on your shoulders, is your research investment worth it? When research adds more to your plate than it takes off, it isn’t an asset. It’s a bottleneck.

The gap

Traditional research agencies have become highly effective at delivering research at scale. But the same standardization that creates efficiency can make it difficult to adapt research to the specific reality of a brand, its consumers, and the decisions an organization needs to make.

This can lead to a generic lens and, ultimately, a generic ‘So What.’ And when scoping, analysis, and delivery happen across separate teams, the context behind the research can become diluted along the way. The result may be a well-executed insights report, but one that tells the business what is happening without getting to what it means or what to do about it.

The solution

Having spent much of my career on the client side, I’ve sat in your chair. I know that interesting isn't enough – research deliverables should be strategic, decisive, and actionable. They should not only inform the decision at hand, but create value long after the project is complete.

So, how do we solve for this?

Remove the barrier between insight and execution.

That means designing research around not just what we need to learn, but the decisions those findings need to inform. Insights can be compelling, but if the business is left to determine what they mean, where the opportunity lies, and what to do next, much of that value gets lost. The real value of research comes when it doesn’t just answer a question, but gives the business a clear path forward.

In practice, that means moving from frame → understand → interpret → activate → enable. No black box. No hand-off. No two-week scramble to piece together a compelling narrative.

This changes what good research looks like, from the questions we ask to the way we turn the answers into action.

  1. Start with the decision, not the questionnaire.

The strongest research begins with a clear understanding of the decisions the business needs to make. By defining those decisions upfront, the research can be designed around the evidence required to make them with confidence.

  2. Turn evidence into clarity.

Data alone rarely creates action. It needs strategic interpretation, context, and a clear point of view. This means moving beyond reporting simply what consumers said to truly understanding the opportunity at hand for the business. The goal is to generate the evidence required to act — not simply the data required to observe.

  3. Build an asset, not a one-off answer.

Research shouldn’t end when the deck is delivered. The core insights should live beyond the project, captured in a usable artifact that the organization can return to, build on, and leverage to inform future decisions.

Ultimately, the goal isn't to produce better research. It’s to make better decisions – and leave the organization better equipped to make the next one.

The Manyone difference

Most research firms stop at the insight. Most strategy firms and design agencies start after the insight. Manyone connects the two.

At Manyone, researchers partner directly with the strategists and designers who act on the findings. By bringing these disciplines together around the same challenge, we eliminate the traditional hand-off between research, strategy, and design – keeping the context, nuance, and implications of the evidence intact all the way through to execution.

This integrated model also gives us the flexibility to build the research around the problem, rather than forcing the problem into a standardized methodology. This way, we can pivot from massive market segmentations to ad-hoc deep dives addressing pressing business hurdles at a speed traditional firms can’t match.

The result is research that doesn’t simply tell you what is happening. It helps you shape what’s next.

What could your research unlock if it didn’t stop at the insight?
